Rowing ACT adopts new Rules (/Constitution)

At a General Meeting on 3 December Member Clubs passed a special resolution to replace the Constitution with new Rules.

The trigger to the change was a cross-sport governance review conducted by the Australian Sports Commission.  The opportunity was then taken to modernise the constitution as its provisions did not contemplate a digital world including electronic commerce and the internet.   There are many changes but some of the major ones are as follows.

  • The Association  is now known formally as Rowing ACT rather than the ACT Rowing Association.
  • Plain English has been used and terminology significantly reduced.
  • Some whole-of-sport objectives are recognised.
  • The rights and obligations of members are spelt out.
  • Boat Racing Officials are now Individual Members of the Association in their own right.
  • The Committee has been replaced by a slightly larger Board.
  • Only the President will now be directly elected.  The two other officials, the Director of Finance and Secretary, will be elected by the Board.
  • The President and Directors will serve two-year terms.
  • Some Directors will be appointees of the Board to allow the Board to achieve diversity or fill skill requirements.
