same words (80Kb) is available here.

Buoys on the Rowing Course
Buoys are still being cut from their moorings daily in Yarramundi
Reach. We now suspect that coaches are doing it with standard outboard
motors. Can you please ensure all coaches are aware of the damage
careless steering is causing.
We also need loose buoys to be collected and returned to Canberra
Rowing Club in Yarralumla Bay. CRC has volunteered to maintain the buoy
infrastructure until ACTRA is able to organise an ongoing maintenance
programme.

ACT Success
at the World Championships
It is a bit late getting posted here, but better late than ever...
Congratulations to ACT rowers who competed at the World Championships
in late August at Milan. Specfically Jane Robinson getting first in the
W4x; Craig Jones and Mitchell Punch who got 4th place in the M4x to
qualify the boat for the Olympics next year; and Donna Martin who had
an interrupted preparation for the very tough W1x to get into the C
Final. Read a summary prepared by Taryn Langdon.
The Masters who also
recently attended their World Championships at Vichy did not come back
with any wins (the only position that gets a medal), but they were able
to confirm that the wine and food was good.

ACT Rowers
at the World Championships
The world championships commence in a couple of days (24 Aug). The FISA
web site is a good source of information that frequently mentions
Australians. Also, the Rowing Australia web site has
Australian-specific news, including 'postcards' from our Jane Robinson.
Also, Taryn Langdon
(ACTAS PR) reports:
The
upcoming World Rowing Championships in Milan, Italy will be tightly
contested as nations begin to fight for Olympic qualification. Winners
of the 2003 World Championships will gain a slight psychological edge
over the world's best as crews prepare for the 2004 Olympic Games in
Athens, the next true test for the national crews.
ACTAS
athlete Jane Robinson and the Australian women's quad scull go into the
World Championships as one of the favourites after the crew won the
recent World Cup event in Switzerland. The crew asserts that they are
ready for a tough battle in, what is regarded as one of the toughest
events on the World Championship program. A win will give Australia a
title that has eluded the Australian quad scull crews in recent history.
Disappointingly,
former ACTAS rower Donna Martin who was in the quad scull in their
World Cup win has withdrawn from the quad through injury. Hopefully the
young sculler who progressed through the ACTAS Talent Search Program
will be fit to row in the women's single scull at the Championships.
The women's scullers are coached by ACT/AIS coach Lyall McCarthy.
Former
ACTAS rowers Craig Jones and Mitchell Punch (Australian men's quad
scull) will be hunting for a place in the men's quad scull final and a
chance of a medal in Milan after a slightly disappointing 7th place at
the last World Cup regatta. ACT and AIS head coach Reinhold Batschi is
coaching the men's quad.

From:
Gordon Marcks at the U23 World Rowing Championships
Sent: Wednesday, 30 July 2003 7:15
Subject: U23 4X Update (LAST ONE!!)
Hi all,
The night before the race the talk was pretty short and really only
about focussing on the simple things like fast catches, strong leg
drive......
We also talked
about that the main aim of the race being to come off the water knowing
that we had had our best row. We knew that if we could do that, that
would probably be enough to win the event as no other crews had come
close to us. We knew that a couple of the crews would be fast over the
first 500 and with a greater effort for the final, they might be ale to
stick with us for 750m but wouldn't be able to maintain that speed.
It all went pretty
much according to plan except that the boys went faster than what I had
anticipated and really had a brilliant row. The first 500 was a bit
tight but with our noses in front, the middle 1000 saw us move away
from the field with about a 4sec margin with 500 to go. The crew
reallylooked fantastic and in total control and I think I got the
impression that they really enjoyed the last 300m or so with no reall
need to step for the line. I had dropped back at that stage because of
the cycle path being too dangerous with all the people but I had no
doubt what the result would be.The splits were something like 1:26 for
the first 500 and then 1:29 for the last three 500's.
I really don't
know what else to write except a huge thankyou to Graham Tanner and
Cathy Finlay and the rest of the team, and to all the support staff
back home - particularly Steve Anderson and Michelle Paccagnella.
Obviously there's heaps more but we'll get around to all that as soon
as I get back.
From here I'm
spending a couple of days in Italy with the senior team (men)
and will try to get to Munich by the weekend.
Very much looking
forward to being back home and can't wait to get out on
the water before it gets too warm........
Yarramundi
Course
The buoys marking the rowing course in Yarramundi Reach are to be
renewed starting Friday, 8 August. It is expected to take 3-4 days to
complete.
The work will
replace all buoys, placing distance signs on the 250m buoys, and
realigning the longitudinal and lateral guide cables. We expect that
the contractor, Ian Dickenson, will only be working at times there are
few if any rowers using the Reach.
You also need to be
careful over this period on Yarramundi Reach because the buoys may not
be there to assist safe traffic flow, particularly in low visibility.
Special attention should be taken (ie. row at low speed) at the finish
of the course and between the 1000m and 1500m starts.
Australian
Masters Games 2003
Entries for the 9th Australian Masters Games close on 15 August. The
online registration web site has undergone some remodelling for rowing
in the past few weeks. New instructions have been published in the rowing section of the AMG site.
Indoor Rowing is still having some corrections made to its online entry
pages and should be available shortly.
Australian
Masters Rowing Championships 2004
Rowing Australia has selected the Sydney International Regatta Centre
and NSWRA as the holders of the 2004 Masters Championships. The ACTRA
bid for this event along with 3 other venues. The 2005 championships
will be in Queensland, at Bundaberg we believe.
[That's all folks.
Obviously I have been falling behind in the news postings]

World Under 23yo Championships
The ACT has some representatives at the World Under 23 Championships
being held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia this weekend. Our interest is the
Men's Quad Scull with Tom Westgarth and Henry Gundy rowing and Gordon
Marcks coaching. Kathy Finlay is providing physio support to the team.
Their first heat is scheduled for 1800hr EST. Gordon has reported back
that he is very happy with their preparation and so, although they have
not seen much of their opposition yet, they are confident of a good
result. A repechage is scheduled for Saturday (if the boys want the
additional row), and the semi-finals and finals on Sunday.
It has been very hot in Belgrade (over 40ºC), but the course
is good. There have been evening thunderstorms to provide some relief
from the heat. The team has worked well and is in good accommodation.
They had the traditional bad shirt competition on the first night.

Winter Time
Trials #2
The second round of the ACT Winter Time Trials was held
last weekend. Results are available for Saturday and Sunday. These results have a small
number of corrections from those first published on the weekend.
The third round of Time Trials are on the weekend of 16-17 August. The
participation level of small boats is very good, but there has been a
drop in the number of 'big' boats competing. This reflects badly on
your level of organisation... get yourselves into crews and entered for
the next WTT.
ACTRA AGM
The Annual General meeting of the ACT Rowing Association was held last
night. Highlights of the reports presented will be published here in
the next couple of weeks. The new committee is listed here
in the usual place. A set of By-Laws
(pdf format) were adopted that match the Association's new (as of
December 2002) constitution.

Rowing
World Cup - Lucerne Regatta
Nearly the entire Australian Rowing team were competing at the last of
the Rowing World Cup regattas at Lucerne, Switzerland last weekend. The
full results can be found on the FISA
website. Articles on the regatta can be found on
the FISA site and at Rowing
Australia. There was an article in the Canberra
Times today on Donna Martin and Jane Robinson winning their womens 4x
race. When looking at the results, you need to keep in mind that some
of the rowers are part of the under 23 squad and so their results in
open competition are also very good. The women's 4- final was dominated
by Australia taking 1st, 4th and 5th places!
Henley
Royal Regatta
The HRR was run the previous week (ending 6 July) with the Australian
women's squad competing. Catriona Oliver (Australia) won the Women's 1x
(Princess Royal Challenge Cup) from Donna Martin (Black Mountain
Rowing Club). B P Hopkins (Australia (Curtin Uni?)) came second in the
men's 1x (Diamond Sculls). ACT Academy of Sport rower Jane Robinson, in
the Australian Women's Quad scull went
down by a length to the Ukraine National crew in the final of the
Princess Grace Challenge Cup. Full results can be found at the HRR web
site.

early November. The games includes both Indoor Rowing (on Concept II
ergometers) and a three day rowing regatta. Entries
for both are through the AMG web site where you
register for the games, then enter your events and pay. You can record
your registration details and event preferences before paying. Your
details are saved for your next session.
We are also calling
for volunteers to assist with the running of the
regatta. We are assuming that most volunteers will want to also compete
in the games and therefore many hands are required to make each
responsibility light. If you are interested in helping make this
another great AMG in Canberra, please contact Brendon Prout on Mb: 0412
286 181 or
(preferred).

Australian
Masters Rowing Championships
The AMRC regatta was held at Nagambie, Victoria during 30 May to 1
June. Twenty seven rowers and one cox from Canberra Rowing Club
competed. Some information on the CRC results can be found on the CRC web site.
Some of the rowers represented the ACT in the Masters Interstate events
with the results being: F4x- 1st; F8+ 4th; M4x- 4th; M8+ 3rd. The
women's quad was a great tight and tough race right to the line, with a
well deserved win to the ACT crew.
NSW Masters
Rowing Championships
The NSWMRC regatta was held on the weekend of 17-18 May at the Sydney
International Regatta Centre, Penrith. ACT Rowers (Black Mountain and
Canberra Rowing Clubs) entered 281 seats in 85 crews with 79 rowers and

ACT
rowers achieve national selection.
Under 23 rower Tom Westgarth was selected in the
Australian under 23 Rowing Team last weekend. Westgarth was selected
alongside former ACTAS rower Henry Gundry, Nick
Hudson (NSW) and Eugene Arendsen (Qld) in the Australian under 23 men's
quad scull. Westgarth and Gundry were both members of the Australian
crew in 2002 and will be looking to better the crews 4th place at the
2002 World Under 23 Regatta. The 2003 Championships will be held in
Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The coach of the crew still to be finalised ACTAS
head coach Gordon Marcks looks to be one candidate.
Marcks' appointment
would mean the crew would be based in Canberra to prepare for the next
2 months before heading to Europe. The crew's first international race
will be at the World Cup regatta in Switzerland in early August, before
the World Under 23 Regatta in late August.
Tom joins fellow
ACTAS rower Jane Robinson on the Australian team in
2003. Robinson who made her 9th Australian team this year began
training last week with the Australian women's sculling squad on Lake
Burley Griffin.

The Yarramundi
Reach rowing course buoy system is to be
overhauled before the start of next regatta season. ACTRA is in the
process of finalising arrangements for the upgrading of the buoys on
the course. The work on the course will be funded jointly by ACTRA, the
ACT Government and the AIS and is currently scheduled to be performed
during August. A survey of the buoy system was conducted about 6 weeks
ago and the cost of the refurbishment has been determined.
The work will
include the replacement of all 400 small buoys; supply of spares; new
large buoys at each 250m with distance indicators; flagged buoys at
start and finish; full realignment lengthwise and cross-wise.

February missed two results. They are:

reinforce the breadth that school rowing is gaining in the ACT. ACT
