Western Parts of Lake Burley Griffin Open
The National Capital Authority (NCA) advises that the western section of Lake Burley Griffin is open to secondary contact recreation, but remains closed to primary contact recreation until further notice.
East Basin and Central Basin remains closed to both primary and secondary contact following high levels of bacteria. The Captain Cook Memorial Jet will remain off.
The western section of the lake from Commonwealth Avenue bridge to Scrivener Dam is open to secondary contact only. The whole lake remains closed to primary contact.
Primary contact recreation means recreation that involves whole-body water contact or submersion of the head. Examples include swimming, diving and windsurfing.
Secondary contact recreation, such as rowing, fishing, boating and canoeing, will still be permitted in the western section of the lake, although persons engaged in secondary contact recreation should be careful to limit any water exposure.
Lake Burley Griffin has been closed since Thursday 1 March as a result of sewage contamination.
