ACT Rowers Day Three of World Junior Rowing Championships

The Junior Men’s quad with ACT rowers Nicholas Barnier and Zac Cleaver teamed with Queensland’s Angus Morton and Tasmanian David Wright were in strong contention for a finals birth on Day Three of the World Junior Championship from the Olympic Rowing Course in Shunyi, Beijing.

The Aussie Boys lined up in a red hot Semi Final with Rowing Powerhouses Germany and host nation China in the field.  With only the first three progressing to the A Final the Australians would have to put in their best performance of the Regatta to date.

The Chinese got away to a great start with Serbia close behind and the Australians battling on the back of the Germans and Slovakians for fourth after 500m.  The Slovaks started to come on strong and had edged ahead of the Germans and started to pull away from the Aussies whilst the Serbs started to drop back through the field.  The Aussies went through the halfway mark in fourth with the Ukraine crew making ground.  China were never headed taking line honours in the fastest time from both Semi Finals ahead of the fast finishing Slovaks and the German squad who took the last A Final Spot with the Aussies finishing fifth.

The Aussie Boys now regroup for an attack on Tomorrow’s B Final were their main competition will come from the Ukraine and Italy.

The ACT Women of Christabelle Northam and Veronica Tamsitt had a rest day today ahead of Tomorrow’s B Final for the Women’s Pair.    They will face stiff competition from South Africa and Canada.

August will be a busy Month for Northam and Tamsitt, returning home from the World Championships they will go straight into training for the 2007 Australian Youth Cup in Nagambie at months end after being named in the ACT’s squad overnight.
