THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE ROWING CLUB AFFILIATED AT THE 53rd AGM

Rowing ACT is very pleased to announce that Member Clubs agreed in August to the affiliation of the Australian Defence Force Rowing Club (ADFRC).   The sport has been growing over time and any addition to the number of Member Clubs is a very welcome event.

Major Gary Bergman explained the reasons behind setting up the Club.

  • To ensure that all personnel (ADF, APS, Reservists, veterans, civilians) participating in rowing training or competition in our boats  when part of a composite crew are insured under Rowing Australia’s National Insurance Program.
  • To increase participation in rowing by ADF personnel whose service precludes or makes it difficult to justify a civilian club membership.
  • To enable ADF personnel to register and compete at broader range of Rowing Australia events without requiring a civilian club membership.
  • To facilitate the participation of ADF (composite) crews consisting of ADF personnel in a wider range of non-regatta events.
  • Becoming a member club will permit participation in targeted international military sports competitions and events. As a member club of Rowing ACT the ADF Rowing Club will be listed on Regatta Central, which provides a medium for contact and interaction between the military forces of other countries.

Gary also explained that the Australian Defence Force Rowing Association (ADFRA) will remain the peak body responsible to ADF Sports Council for promoting and developing rowing in the ADF.   ADFRA will administer and support the ADF, ADFA and RMC Rowing Clubs, as well as ADF Members of civilian rowing clubs.  There is no requirement for civilian rowing club members to change clubs.

Membership of the ADF Rowing Club will initially be limited to full time and Reserve ADF members. Affiliate/Associate membership will possibly be available for veteran personnel in the future.   Membership will not be available to members of the wider non-Defence community.

The ADF Sports Strategy 2015–2019 requires that all members of the ADF are provided every opportunity and encouraged to participate in sport at a level commensurate with their preference and ability.   With the ADF Rowing Club as an RA affiliated Club, an increase in active ADF personnel in rowing on a range of levels is expected, particularly in non-regatta events.

Gary said the Committee of the ADF Rowing Club looks forward to working with Rowing ACT, ACT Rowing clubs and ACT rowers to continue promoting and developing the sport.

The Invictus Games are very much in the spotlight at the moment.  ADF Rowing, in conjunction with Gordon Marcks who is the Senior Coach for Para-Rowing at Rowing Australia, have been supporting since January the 2017 Invictus Games selection camp for indoor rowing.  This included coaching the Canberra based Invictus Games indoor rowing athletes since that time.  Two athletes, Pilot Officer Nathan Parker and Lance Corporal Gary Wilson are currently competing in the 2017 Invictus Games.   ADF Rowing is currently planning to support a larger Indoor rowing contingent for the 2018 Invictus Games, which will be held in Sydney.

2017 Winter Time Trial Pointscore Winners

The 2017 Winter Time Trials series has concluded following WTT 5 on 17/23 September.

The Men’s 1x Kwiatkowski Cup came down to the wire, with the top 5 rowers all within 10 points leading into the final WTT. Sitting 2nd, Tom Perry (CRC/HPP) won maximum points to pass leader Hayden Vanderwoude (Shellharbour) and win his second consecutive Kwiatkowski Cup, the first rower to do so. Rob Curtin (BMRC) and Tyron Boorman (BMRC/HPP) were 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

In the Women’s 1x Circulis Plate, Sarah Larkin (ANU/HPP) entered WTT5 with only Alexandra Moylan (CRC) any chance of passing her, 8 points back in 2nd. Larkin won maximum points and with Moylan a scratching, she ran away with the Circulis Plate to win by 24 points. Moylan held onto 2nd, while Alice Hatcher (ANU) and Maddy Bennett (CRC/HPP) tied for 3rd.

The BMRC/CRC combination of Damien Pentony, Ian Mongan & Seb Lang won the Open 2-; and a tie for 1st in the Women’s 2- between CRC’s Camille Cherbuin, Kerry Knowler & Elaine Bissaker, and the ANU’s Miranda Hall, Jana Pretorius & Sarah Edwards.

The Open 2x was anyone’s race to win, with 5 points separating the top 4 crews with one WTT to go. CRC’s Nerida Carter, Darrell Ninham & Judi Walsh held onto 1st by a single point from CGS Old Boy’s Gary Power & Alan Carey. Glebe’s Anna Hueneke & Kenneth Major finished 3rd, making the trip to Canberra for every WTT this year.  Kerrie Smyth & Emma Southcott (CRC) won the Women’s 2x from BMRC/LTRC’s Cecilie Young & Christine Young in 2nd.

The BMRC crew of David Whyte, Andrew Bailey, Colin Calderwood, Frank Briggs, Brendon Ellis & Judith Abercromby won the Open 4x. Capital Lakes’ Rebecca Perkins Lauren Kalkman Geoff Nichols, Nigel Miller, Masumi Yamamoto & Daniel Payten came 2nd. In the Women’s 4x, the LTRC crew of Maricelle Oringo, Samantha Warne, Caitlin Banton, Heather Warne and Grace West proved consistency is key, picking up points in all five WTTs to finish 1st.

Both 8+ pointscores were close affairs with only 1 point between 1st and 2nd. ANU won the Opens, and BMRC the Women’s.

What is School Pathway 8+?
A Rowing Australia Initiative designed to provide opportunity for school athletes to develop along the pathway with the aim to progress towards high performance rowing.

Who’s Eligible?
• ACT School girls and boys currently rowing for a school or club
• Year 10 & 11 students in 2017 (Years 11 & 12 in 2018)

Predicted Camp and Event Dates
*In consultation with school/club rowing programs. January Camp to be worked around school program
camps.

Entries open for National Training Centre Time Trials

Entries are invited for the 1st RACT/ACTAS, NTC Time Trial of the 2017-18 season to be held on 30th September 2017. Information on events and entries can be found on the RACT calendar http://regattas.rowingact.org.au/

ELIGIBILITY

Competitors eligible to enter must be registered members of RACT, and comply with the RACT Status Rules governing competition.

All competitors are required to wear their club racing uniform.

All athletes are required to participate in a supervised weigh-in on the day.

LIGHTWEIGHT LIMITS

As per the 2017 ART Event Requirements Lightweight competitors will have their weight recorded prior to racing however, there is no set weight requirement for the September Time Trial

Rowing ACT Board for 2017-8

There has been turnover within the Board of Rowing ACT following our recent AGM. Long term Secretary Pat Davoren, who has filled a range of roles on the Board since the 1960s, did not stand for re-election. Patrick’s contribution to governance, his local knowledge and his life long enthusiasm for our sport has been exemplary. His continuing involvement with Canberra Rowing Club is great news for our biggest club, and our sport.

Rob Curtin did not seek re-election to the Board, after contributing significantly to governance, discussions about upgrading media and high performance. We look forward to seeing both Rob and Pat enjoying themselves on Lake Burley Griffin.

New faces on the board includes Bill Mason, who brings strong governance and business links to the table. Deb Styman will return to the Board, with her strong sports administration knowledge, and links to both school and community rowing.

Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club – Come and Try Day

The Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club is hosting a Come and Try Day on Saturday 7 October 2017, 9.00am – 11.00am at the LTRC shed under the Tuggeranong Library on Cowlishaw Street.

This information morning is for anyone 12 years and older who is interested in joining Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club or completing one of our learn to row programs.
