Lake Burley Griffin - Traffic Rules for Rowing

The following rules have been developed to make rowing on LBG safer and more pleasant for everyone. It is a voluntary code.

LBG%20traffic%20flow%20map.gif
  1. Please adhere to traffic flows shown on the map above.
  2. Generally, it is bow side to the bank.
  3. On the course (Yarramundi Reach):
    1. No rowing in lanes 1 or 2.
    2. Tinnies to travel down the centre of the course from start to finish.
    3. Tinnies traveling from the finish to the start must create no wash for crews using the course. Don't expect to travel with your crew when going in this direction.
    4. Do not stop on the course – if you are finishing a piece then exit the course immediately if there are other crews coming down behind you.
  4. At Black Mountain, ensure you travel past the last red buoy before turning the corner from Tarcoola Reach towards the course (near BMRC)
  5. Pass boats traveling in the opposite direction stroke side to stroke side.
  6. Power boats give way to rowing boats who give way to sailing boats.
  7. The overtaking boat has right of way: the boat being overtaken must move to bow side (towards the shore) and the overtaking boat should move to the middle of the course. The boat being overtaken should call out to alert the faster crew as to their presence.
  8. Coxswains need to be aware of crews approaching from the stern.
  9. Use common sense and courtesy.
  10. Duty of care says that you must do everything you can to avoid an accident.
