conducting a cycling race on Lady Denman Drive which will result in a
road closure from 08:45 until 10:00. The road closure will

Lake
Burley Griffin water level to drop this week
The NCA has authorised the lowering of the water level of the
lake
by approx 200mm on Thursday 2 October 2008 to perform restoration works
on a jetty. Work has been scheduled to occur prior to the next forecast
storm event this coming weekend to ensure minimal disruption to lake
users. Please be careful around the shallow edges of the
lake,
and particularly where rocks have come near the surface in the past:
near the Katie Bender memorial; east side of Black Mountain Peninsula;
white posts near the AIS; either side of the rowing course in
Yarramundi Reach between 250m and 1000m marks. This is not an
exhaustive list.
For more information regarding this work or the lowering of the lake,
please
contact Peter Clarke, Senior Project officer on 02 6271 289
Traffic
Flow in Kingston Area
The
works at Kingston Foreshore have resulted in some close misses between
Capital Lakes boats and those of other clubs. Note the following
guidelines:
- Boats travelling towards Kingston must go through
the 1st or 2nd span on the Barton side of the lake.
- They then row down the Barton/Kingston side of East
Basin - finishing on the Kingston side of the CLRC access channel.
- After
stopping, row towards the mouth of the Molonglo River, being careful of
traffic going to and from CLRC, and only turning towards Kings Avenue
Bridge once you are well past CLRC.
- On the way to Central Basin, pass under Kings Avenue
Bridge using one of the 3 spans on the Russell side of the lake.
Star Picket thrown
from Commonwealth Avenue Bridge
There
is a report that someone threw a star picket at the steam boat
Enterprise last Saturday morning as it passed under Commonwealth Avenue
Bridge. Please keep a watch and warn fellow rowers if you see anything
suspicious. Also report anything suspicious to the police.

Lake
Burley Griffin level to be dropped for maintenance
At
the NCA Lake User’s Group meeting this morning the lake custodian
announced a need to do maintenance work on a wharf that could only be
done with a lower water level. Some time in the
next 4
weeks the NCA is going to wait for a rain forecast and then drain 20cm
from the lake. The maintenance work will be accomplished
quickly
and if the weather forecast is correct the lower water level should
only be with us for a couple of days. NCA
will advise
when they propose to take this action, we thus should have a few days
warning of the drop. The NCA warning will be circulated on
receipt.

Local
Boats for Sale
Canberra Girls Grammar School is selling three of its boats - two coxed
quads and one double scull. These boats are S&B built
fibreglass & timber construction and make great learn-to-row
boats. They are still being regularly used in the CGGS learn-to-row
program, but have now become excess to needs. They are cheap yet solid
boats that would suit junior school students up to novice masters.
Please contact Dafydd Gwynn-Jones at Canberra Girls Grammar School
by
or
phone (02) 62026456.

Lakes RC Regatta - Final Draw Update
A boat clash has required an adjustment to the draw. Division
1 of the MGB 2x event will move to 11:50. This means some
races
will start 5 minutes later than the previously advertised time.
Timeliness
for Event Starts - Bow Numbers
Can
all competitors please ensure they arrive at the start marshalling area
at least 10 minutes before the advertised starting time of each event.
Our boat race officials attempt to be lenient with late arrivals, but
it is getting out of hand and making running the regattas difficult.
You can expect to be disqualified more readily in the future.
Also
causing difficulties for our voluntary officials is the use of
non-standard boat numbers, or no number at all. Please ensure you use a
regulation colour and size number. These can be hired from the finish
judging tent.

Reach for Kayaks this coming weekend
A
Kayaking Gran Prix is taking place on Saturday 19th January from 10:00
till sundown and then Sunday 20th January from 07:00 until 15:00 on the
rowing course from the 1800 m mark to the 500 m mark. The
rowing
course and Weston Park have been booked for these times and there will
be at least 8 large
hard-plastic buoys and the two pontoons
on the course for the duration of the event. Rowers using the
course outside of these times are warned to keep a sharp lookout for
these obstacles as hitting them may cause harm. For those
users
of the lake who are interested, most of the participants in the Grand
Prix are Olympic 2008 hopefuls so this event gives Canberrans a unique
opportunity to see Australia’s top paddlers in action.
