Regatta #3 (Black
Mountain RC) - Correction

Regatta #3
(Black Mountain RC) - Call for Entries
Entries
for the Black Mountain Rowing Club Regatta (on 01 December) close this
weekend with your club. The event list can be found here.
Like last year, Black Mountain RC is offering cash prizes. This year it
is a total of $5,000 and is for both open men's single sculls and
women's open pairs. A flyer about the "BMRC Sculls Challenge" can be
found here (note that entries cannot be
input to ROMS as said on the flyer - they must be submitted through an
RA affiliated club).
ACT and
ROMS
The
ACT Rowing Association will no longer be using the ROMS system this
season. ROMS was used to publish event lists and support entries by
clubs. Therefore, if you looked for event lists and entries made on
ROMS, you will no longer find ACTRA regattas listed there. Event lists
will continue to be published on this web site.

Lake
Burley Griffin Closure - its open for use
The
National Capital Authority has lifted its prohibition on using LBG.
This applies to all use, not just rowing. The postponement of the
Capital Lakes RC Regatta still applies - to next Saturday, 24 November.

Regatta #2
(Capital Lakes RC) - postponed one week
The
second regatta of the ACT season is being postponed to 24 November due
to the Lake Burley Griffin closure. The National Capital Commission is
due to make its next assessment of the lake's safety on Friday
afternoon. This timing does not give ACTRA sufficient time to deal with
the possible outcomes.
If you need or want to change your entry,
you can do this through your club. Find out from your club's regatta
secretary when changes need to be submitted. A new regatta draw will be
published next week.
Motor Boat
Driver Licence - ACT Test Session Announced
People
driving motor boats on the ACT's lakes are required to hold a current
motor boat driver's licence. The ACT does not issue its own licences
and therefore a NSW licence is the easiest option. You can arrange to
sit a licence test in Queanbeyan, or you can join in with fellow rowing
people at an ACTRA arranged seminar and test session starting at 18:30
on Wednesday, 12 December at Sports House, Hackett. Costs are $10 for
the seminar, $27 to attempt the licence test, $41 for a 1 year licence,
$97 for a 3 year Licence, $20 for a 1 year Licence concession holder,
and $47.50 for a 3 year Licence concession holder. Please
RSVP to
ACTRA by Wednesday 5 December. You can read about the licence
requirements on the NSW government web site.

Lake
Burley Griffin Closure - yep, still closed
We
believe their has been an improvement to the bacteria levels in the
Lake in the most recent test. There will be more test results
due
in tomorrow (Thursday) and it looks highly likely that secondary
activities (boating) may be able to recommence before the
weekend. We will advise the status after the NCA
meeting
tomorrow. Please note that the Lake still remains closed
until
the NCA officially declares the lake is suitable for use.

Boat Race
Officials - We need some more
We
need some volunteers to give up a couple of Saturday mornings each
summer to motor around on Yarramundi Reach enjoying good company and
ensuring our rowing regattas are run efficiently, safely and fairly.
ACT Boat Race Officials have a wonderful reputation in Australian
rowing circles and you would be joining a great group. If you are
interested in finding out more, please contact the ACTRA office.

Lake
Burley Griffin Closed by NCA
Due
to a sewerage spill in Queanbeyan, Lake Burley Griffin has been closed
for swimming and boating (other than the ferries) until further notice.
The spill was on Thursday and the closure is because of bad test
results, not just suspected dangers. Rowers who were out today on the
lake should take care of any symptoms of illness and consider medical
help. The water has a high bacteria count. You can read the NCA media
release here.

Col Panton
Rowing Marathon - new details
The start time
for the marathon has been set at 08:30
Daylight Saving Time.
All competitors need to be at the start line for instructions and
marshalling 15 minutes before the start (08:15). The event must start
on schedule to avoid interference with Sri Chinmoy triathlons that are
taking place on Sunday morning. We are timing the marathon between two
triathlon swim stages. One starts at 07:00 and the next at
09:00.
See lake traffic warnings below because one way or another, you are
going to be seriously affected. Note that there are road closures
associated with the triathlons as well.
The start
line will be
about 50m into East Basin from the Kingston Boat Harbour - in open
water. This is because of the construction works around the boat
harbour.
Lake
Burley Griffin Traffic Warning - Saturday & Sunday 27-28 October
This weekend there is a series of triathlons taking place. Details are
on the Sri Chinmoy web site.
Besides road closures, there will be swimmers in the lake generally in
the area from Yarralumla Beach towards Black Mountain. Be careful on
the days leading up to the weekend for people training, and then on the
weekend. The scheduled races seem to be:
- Saturday 08:00 - Yarralumla Beach to Black Mountain
Peninsula (one way)
- Saturday 14:30 - only in the Yarralumla Beach area
- Saturday 15:30 - Yarralumla Beach to near Spinnaker
Island and return
- Sunday 07:00 - one lap from Yarralumla Beach to
almost the
Museum, towards Black Mountain past west side of Springbank Island,
then back past west side of Spinnaker Island to Yarralumla Beach (3.2km)

Michelle Simpson
The ACT Rowing Association notes with regret, the passing of Michelle
Simpson, on 26 April 2007, following a long and valiant battle with
cancer. A keen rower herself, Michelle had played an
instrumental
role in the development of rowing over the past 15 years, initially
with the Canberra Rowing Club, and more recently, was instrumental in
the formation of The Lake Tuggeranong Rowing Club.
Always a great contributor and motivator, Michelle would
work
tirelessly on all aspects of her clubs' development, from holding
office on committees, initiating rower development programs,
implementing learn-to-row sessions, completing grant applications for
the purchase of club equipment, general fundraising and assistance on a
day to day level. Over and above this considerable contribution, and
forsaking an increasingly complex health status, Michelle was also a
willing contributor to the rank of Boat Race Officials, those folk
tasked with the safe and efficient running of our club regatta's.
Over the years, Michelle has continued to make a strong
contribution to, not only her home club, but to the ACT Rowing
Association in general. ACTRA is greatly saddened by her
passing,
and extends its most sincere condolences to her family, her fellow club
members, and her many friends within and outside of our sport.

ACTRA
Executive Officer resigns
Brendon Prout, ACTRA President, announced with
regret on Saturday, 17
March that Camilla Hayman has resigned as Executive Officer of the ACT
Rowing Association. He said "I am thrilled to announce that the reason
for her resignation is because Camilla and Brett are expecting their
first baby in October this year".
"Over the past 10 months, Camilla has made an enormous
contribution to
the sport of rowing within the ACT, and the individuals involved within
the sport. She has worked long hours, in every aspect of the operation,
including overseeing the implementation of the ROMS system, and other
aspects of Regatta Management. As a result of her efforts, regatta
participation has increased, assisting greatly with the financial
position of the association.
"I take this opportunity to formally acknowledge the
enormous
contribution of Camilla, and on behalf of all within the ACT Rowing
family, wish her and Brett everything wonderful for the future."
As a consequence of Camilla's resignation, ACTRA now
seeks a
replacement, and accordingly you will see ads appearing in Canberra
Times, and the SEEK website, in a bid to attract candidates. For that
reason, please feel free to give this message your widest possible
circulation.

entered across all age groups, then only one race will be held. If
there are 12 crews entered, then 2 races will be held with the lowest
handicap times in one race and the largest handicap times in the second
race.

ACTRA
Regatta - volunteers needed
Entries for the regatta this weekend have indicated
that
it will be quite a small regatta with close racing and an early finish.
The last race is scheduled for 11.10am. To ensure the regatta
runs safely and efficiently, we require at least 2 volunteers from each
of the competing clubs (Daramalan, Radford, CRC, BMRC and CGS). Ideally
we would like one of the volunteers to have a boat driving licence.
This is a great opportunity for coaches to get on the water and follow
their crews racing or parents and friends to get an up close view of
competition. Please advise ACTRA of your
availability to
assist with the regatta ASAP. We would really appreciate your support.

Australia Day
Bridge to Bridge Race
Congratulations and thank you to all who competed in the Bridge to
Bridge race on Friday evening. Well done to the CLRC crew who
were wearing the yellow and green wigs – you were voted “Best
Dressed’ out of all the boats in the ‘Life of the
Lake’ boat parade.
The B2B winning crew was the Australian Institute of
Sport
Men’s team. The crew was comprised of current and previous
World
Cup medalists and are all contending for a spot in the team for the
2007 World Championships.
It was a great spectacle to have such an inclusive fun race that
included aspiring young rowers, competitive club rowers and
representatives from the Australian Team. Rowing is a traditional and
successful sport in Australia and the opportunity to provide some
exposure to the wider community on Australia Day in the National
Capital was excellent.
Some photo’s of the event are available -- full size jpgs

The final draw information for the regatta this Saturday is here: schedule; draw; draw 2; program. Remember to check the time of the event
as well as the race number as some events are run together.
Regatta notes:
- Given the low lake levels and crowded boating area on
the
foreshore, please be aware of what other rowers and boats are doing for
the safety of yourself and others.
Mostly fine weather is forecast with an expected top of
30degrees, possibly showers in the afternoon.

Bridge to
Bridge Race - Australia Day
The Bridge to Bridge race this year is significantly different to
previous years in the time of day it is being run, and the composition
of crews. It is no longer for mixed 8s only, and it will now be run at
7:30pm. Handicapping will apply where necessary, another
innovation.
-
Crews should proceed on the south bank towards Kings
Ave
Bridge and wait at the southern end of the bridge until the race is due
to begin.
-
Start time is 7:35pm. Marshalling will start at
7:25pm.
-
The starting line will be at the northern end of
Kings Ave Bridge.
-
The finish line will be a line between Regatta Point
and
the corner in front of the National Library (about 1.4km). An umpires
boat will be there identifying the finish line.
-
An exclusion zone will exist around the Captain Cook
water jet as this is where the fireworks barge will be.
-
All crews are encouraged to do a ‘lap of
honour’ after the race – proceed past the finish
area
before turning to bow side and rowing past Regatta Point before looping
back around the exclusion zone and passing under Commonwealth Ave
Bridge back to the sheds (CLRC can pass straight through the centre of
the lake).
-
About 10 – 12 club 8’s are
expected to
race– a great turn out. After the Bridge to Bridge, 3 crews
from
the Rowing Australia National Team camp will have their own race.
-
The event organizers are encouraging all sorts of
dress
ups if you choose (remember there are families watching so some sort of
clothing should be worn).
-
Between 7.10pm and 7:30pm there will be a
‘Life of
the Lake Parade’ including a celebrity dragon boat race,
canoes
and ferries. This is why crews need to be in East Basin by 7pm.
We’ll wait for the any wash to clear before starting the race.
-
Crews should exit Central Basin by 8pm.
-
For safety reasons, 8+’s will not be
permitted to stay on the water to watch the fireworks.
Questions to ACTRA and have a fun race!

an excellent opportunity to show case our sport. The National Capital
Authority is proudly supporting the event and has committed financial
sponsorship.
We need all clubs to boat all their eights to make the
B2B the
best yet. Mixed crews, novelty crews, dress up crews are all encouraged
and we’d love to see as many of you as possible on the water.
Club need to inform ACTRA the approximate number of crews by the end of
this week with final crews due on the 23rd January. Numbers are needed
for the event organizers.
