Black
Mountain RC Regatta - Results
The results of the BMRC Regatta can be found here.
Note that races after event 54 are not included due to crews
racing out of order and the cancellation of the final events due to the
wind. Updated Rower Scores will be circulated soon. Well done
to
all rowers who competed in the variable conditions. A big
thank
you to Black Mountain Rowing Club for hosting the event and to Peter
Wright and John Gasson for being instrumental in the coordination and
preparation for the Women’s Sculls Challenge. It was a
wonderful
event and one that I hope to see continue in future seasons. We would
also like to acknowledge Kate Lundy for taking the time to present the
prizes to the finalists of the Sculls Challenge and to Marty Rabjohns
for his expert commentary and superb MC’ing in the finish
area.
Once again the BRO’s did a great job and had to
make the
difficult call to finish racing early due to changes in the weather
conditions. It was great to see a good representation of
media
attending the regatta, thanks to all at the finish line for your
contribution to the atmosphere.
National

morning (Black Mountain Peninsula to Kingston) and be patient and
considerate to the visiting athletes. They are trying to do great
things and might need some space to do that in.

National Selection Trials -
Requirements
Information has been released by Rowing Australia
regarding the conduct of the NTC time trials which is particularly
relevant for anyone who wishes to be considered for 2007 National Team
and/or the 2008 Olympic Team. The main points for the ACT
trials
are that all remaining NTC trials will be conducted in single sculls
(as per previous advice). Anyone who is intending to nominate for this
years' team or the Olympic team should note that participation in the
National Approved Plan (NAP) events are compulsory (with a few
exemptions such as current "A" team members etc.). You can
contact Gordon Marcks at ACTAS Rowing for any clarification.

Youth Cup
Regatta - More Results
In my rush to put some Youth Cup results on our web site, I overlooked
that as well as the 4th place in the W2- Div 1 by Christabelle Northham

places to Emma Cook in the W1x Div1; 5th to Erin Neil in the W1x Div2;
and, 6th to the W4- with Grace Peaty, Veronica Tamsitt, Christabelle
Northam & Brydie Foran.

Youth Cup
Regatta Results
The results from the Australian Youth Cup Regatta held in Adelaide last
weekend are available on the South Australian Rowing Association web
site here. The best result from the ACT
crews was a 4th place in the W2- Div 1 by Christabelle Northham and
Brydie Foran. Several other got in the A final. Third hand information
provided to this site is that it was quite rough on West Lakes which
tends to upset ACT rowers used to flat water.
Strength
and Conditioning Conference - Gold Coast 24-26 Nov
There is a "National Confernce" on strength and conditioning coming up.

World
Championships Results - Finals
Its best if you go to the Rowing
Australia web site to see the Australian results and news
summary, or the FISA site for overall results and
commentary. We have copied a couple of photos from the Rowing Australia
site so that you can see our ACT athletes enjoying themselves. There is
Craig Jones racing in the M2x, Sarah Cook with the W8, and showing off her Bronze medal; and Sonia Mills racing in the W4x, and
making her Bronze medal look like gold.
The turnout at the Rugby Union Club last night was great, and all had
good fun watching the races together.
Winter Time
Trial #4 - Entries due this weekend
The last winter time trial for 2006 is less than two weeks away.
Entries close this weekend with your club. Last chance to be in the
running for great prizes and prestige.
Water
Safety - Keeping to the correct side
This
is another reminder about Water Safety. Please be aware at all times of
where you are located on the lake and ensure that you are on the
correct side. All clubs should have a lake flows map posted in their
shed, please take the time to review it. If your club doesn't have one,
please ask ACTRA and we will get one to you. The easiest way to
remember the rules Keep Bow Side to the Bank. There
has recently been a near collision in East Basin where a squad was on
the wrong side.
We would like to thank everyone for being aware of the new buoys in
Tarcoola Reach and adhering to the correct side in this black spot.

were mailed out), and required safety equipment, and the driver's
powerboat licence.

Trial #3 - Results Corrections
Corrections have been made to the weekend's results. Mack Wilcox did
15:35.01, not 16:35.01. This places him 6th on the handicap placing's.
Also on Sunday, crew #82 was a 4+, not a 4x. These corrections have
been made to the results page.

outlined the role of boat race officials and the personal rewards of
officiating. Taryn Langdon spoke to a paper that provides some
assistance to those starting rowing and their families. Finally,

Transport from Europe to Australia
Is
anyone looking to get a boat from Europe out to Australia within the

it shipped separately. Joint shipping will save costs. If you are
interested contact Gary

World Championships
Start next week
The World Rowing Championships start next week at Eton, UK. There are
some stories starting to appear on the FISA web site and some should
start appearing on the Rowing Australia web site soon. Sarah Cook is
one of our ACT team members and she said a earlier today:
"...I have
been a bit of a hermit for the past couple of months. We have been
training very hard for what seems like an eternity but we're finally at
the business end of the season.
"We have
been in Varese in northern Italy for the last week doing a speed
camp... The lake here, for those of you that havn't seen it, is an
awesome training venue. We train out of the Gavirate rowing club at the
base of the mountains, on this side of the lake we have the Alps as a
backdrop, its quite amazing. The weather has been pleasently warm and
not too windy. Though last night we had a spectacular thunderstorm at
about mid night which everyone got up to watch! But aside from the odd
bit of rain, things have been pretty good.
"The eight
and our small boats are starting to come together, we've been doing
some really consistently fast speeds and everyone is getting pretty
fired up! We are sharing the lake with the British team (when i say
share, i mean they have their half of the lake and we have ours!) There
have been a few heated telephone calls as a result of rebel crews
straying beyond the boundaries (we may have been one of them today...)
We all leave for London on Tuesday though which is very exciting, and
its a week today until racing begins."

making Rowing ACT the best run rowing organisation in Australia. For

Universities
Trans-Tasman Rowing 2006
The Trans Tasman Series was held in Sydney between 3 and 8 July. The
competition involved university crews from Australia and New Zealand
racing each other over a 3.4km course on the Parramatta River, a 5km
course on the Nepean River, and a 2km course at the Sydney
International Regatta Centre. Each country boated a men's and women's
eight, a men's lightweight four, and a women's lightweight quad.
ACT rowers Daniel
Coombes (ANU), Christopher Ritchie (ANU), Tom Watkins (CRC) and Mack
Wilcox (ANU) were selected as the Australian University Lightweight
Coxless Four. The rest of the Australian team was made up of Sydney
University Boat Club rowers.
The Aussie LM4- won
all of their races by large margins against their Kiwi counterparts,
and thus retained the Sam Le Compte Trophy named after the well-known
Tasmanian coach who trained many Olympic and World Championship crews.
Unfortunately, New
Zealand emerged as the overall winners of the competition, having
defeated the Australians in every race in all the other boat
categories. Nevertheless, the Aussie lighty four were able to hold
their heads high at the post-competition celebration -- a boat cruise
of Sydney harbour at night.
The Australian
University Lightweight Four would like to particularly thank the
following people:
James Tyree for his dedicated and long hours of coaching; John Bowes of
Sydney Rowing Club for lending out a boat and oars; the event
organisers -- Alan Bennett and Phil Bourguignon of Sydney University
Boat Club; Joe and Jack from Powerhouse Hotel, Glebe; Doug from Castle
Hill Inn. Thanks also to Edmund from Riverview Bakers Delight, and
Natalie and Ali of Thai-Tanic Restaurant in Glebe for their sponsorship.

Lake Burley Griffin Navigation Buoys
To
improve on water safety, a 3 buoys have been placed in a line between
Kurrajong Pt and Black Mountain/Daramalan boatsheds. This has been an
area of particular safety concern. All traffic proceeding to Yarramundi
Reach should keep to the north of the line, and all traffic returning
from Yarramundi Reach should keep to the south of the line. Please
observe this new safety measure as well as existing safety measures
such as using a 360degree flashing light when out between sunset and
sunrise. Vigilance is still paramount and lake users who do not adhere
to traffic rules may find themselves held personally responsible for
damage and their club's insurance may not cover them for the damage

Winter Time Trial #1 - Start List
The start list for the first Winter Time Trials of 2006 is available here. Note that first boat is away
at 9:30am on both days. Please listen for instructions at the start and
ensure you move up to the start promptly and carefully.
ACTAS
Rowing Scholarship aspirants
As per
(draft) 2007 ACTAS Rowing Scholarship Criteria, all athletes who wish
to be considered should have entered this Saturday's part of the ACTRA
Winter Time Trial.
Further to this there is a 6000m ergometer test scheduled for Monday
26th of June. This will be conducted at the ACTAS shed in the morning
and athletes intending to do this should contact
(m:0407 787270) as soon as possible to
confirm their start time.
Australian Team Results in Second Rowing
World Cup Regatta
The full results can be found on the FISA
web site. The Australian perspective can be found on the Rowing
Australia web site. For our ACT representatives:
- Sonia Mills was 3rd in the W2x 0.12secs
behind another AUS crew 2nd and only 1.5secs from 1st. Then she came
6th in the W4x.
- Sarah Cook was
4th in the W2- 4.5secs behind 3rd place AUS crew. She then came 4th in
the W8+ only 6.11secs behind winners ROM.
- Craig Jones did
not race as he was ill.
Brendon Prout - ACTRA President
Some of you will be aware that Brendon Prout has been dealing with some
medical issues recently. I can now advise you that Brendon went into
hospital last Saturday for a major operation on a recently detected
throat cancer. The recovery period for this is expected to be around 3
to 4 months.
The ACTRA Committee has given Brendon leave from his position as the
ACTRA President for this period. The Committee will review Brendon's
recovery and intentions with him around the time that nominations fall
due for the ACTRA Committee elections, prior to Annual General Meeting
in August.
Brendon has worked tirelessly on behalf of ACT Rowing for many years
and is an excellent representative of our sport. He has often had to go
in to bat hard on behalf of the ACT at territory and national forums,
helping to secure and maintain hard won funding for ACTRA programs.
Most recently Brendon has been busy pushing the case for a 2000m course
on Lake Burley Griffin with the National Capital Authority. Brendon has
also been very active as the President of Canberra Rowing Club.
I am sure you will join me in wishing Brendon a successful operation
and a speedy recovery.

Lake Burley
Griffin traffic rules
Gordon Marcks, Head Rowing Coach at ACTAS, has some comments on safe
winter rowing on Lake Burley Griffin:
"With our return to the water, also comes the reminder about adherence
to the traffic rules and the need to do your best to minimise any risk
to yourself as well as others. The traffic rules are well documented,
publicised and accepted and anyone who chooses to cut-corners exposes
themselves to being held liable for any damage or injury in the advent
of an accident. If an athlete is negligent they can expect to be held
personally responsible and may find that [their Club's] insurance will
not be used to pay for the damage.
Some areas of particular concern are:
- The turn around
in East Basin and Scrivener Dam,
- The long stretch
between Museum Point and Spinnaker Island,
- The turn in front
of Black Mtn Rowing Club going towards the course,
- The start and
finish lines on the course and
- The area directly
in front of the AIS.
"Great care needs to
be taken in these areas, and even if you are on the correct
side be vigilant and on the look out at all times for other
rowers who may have inadvertently found themselves in the wrong. There
have been a few near misses where everyone thinks they are in the right.
"Please report ALL
collisions and even near misses as soon as possible directly to [your
club] so that [they] can follow them up, hopefully making the lake a
safer place for everyone."
Note that lake
traffic maps are available through the ACTRA Info
link on the index to your left. We are currently negotiating with the
Water Police and NCA to place a new turning buoy near Black Mountain.

Youth Cup
Selections
Erg testing
(2000m) will be completed this week with CGGS girls doing it at the
CGGS shed Wed morning. All others will be done at the ACTAS boatshed on
Friday morning as per the times in the spreadsheet here. ALL athletes
will need to complete the erg this week please. The start times are
listed so get there with enough time to warm up before that.
The sculling
trial will take place on the course with the first boat
starting at the 1500m start at 8.00am. Men are asked to be in position
at 7.55 and wait for the coaches instructions. Women should be there at
8.00am for an 8.05 start. The start list is attached but the order will
probably change once we have the erg results in. Just remember: boys
start at 8.00am and girls at 8.05am.
Athletes who nominated as lightweights will NOT need to do the scull
trial due to there be a requirement to have three lightweights in the
team.
Selections will be made following the completion of the sculling trial
and the team will be announced as soon as possible after that.
Youth Cup
Meeting
There will be a meeting held on Saturday morning (17th) at the ACTAS
Boat shed regarding the upcoming Youth Cup. Whilst it will mainly
concern the Youth Cup event, any interested coaches are invited to
attend. Please advise your availability to
by COB Friday. The meeting will be held
after the sculling trial so approximately 8:30am.
Agenda:
* Emphasis for training the youth cup team
* Coaching/management staff for the youth cup
* Anything else....
Please contact Gordon Marcks on 0407 787 270 if you have any questions.

Executive Officer, effective immediately. Camilla replaces Ross Jones
who recently resigned to take up an appointment with ACT Soccer (or was
that football?).
Brendon added:

understanding of rowing issues across all strata within Canberra, and
further afield across Australia. Please join with me in welcoming

Hi, a bit of a break
on the ACT rowing news front, but here is a good load of news in an
attempt to catch up...
NCA Lake
Burley Griffin Survey
The National Capital Authority is conducting a survey on impressions of
LBG. You should complete the survey online here and support our sport
and our sympathetic use of the lake.
Australian
Masters Rowing Championships
About 80 ACT masters rowers attended the AMRC at Nagambie Victoria
19-21 May. The ACT contingent entered about 10% of the seats racing at
the regatta. The number of medals won is still being counted, but there
were 17 wins by Canberra Rowing Club crews (including composites). We
believe no young rowers were injured in the running of the event.
Results can be found on the Rowing
Victoria web site.
Our
National Representatives at Munich World Cup
The Australian senior rowing team is in Europe at the moment and raced
at the first World Cup Regatta in Munich last weekend. The ACT's Craig
Jones (M2x), Sonia Mills (W8 & W2-) and Sarah Cook (W8
& W2-) were racing. Sonia is doing a nice bit of reporting
for the Rowing Australia web site [click on the "Impressions from
Europe" link in the middle of the page]. The results can be
found through the reformated and complex FISA
WorldRowing web site.
Winter Time
Trials
Don't forget that the WTTs start in 3 weeks. Start organising. Also,
please be careful of your navigation when practising the course,
especially when there is mist.
Winter
Rowing
There
have been a couple of collisions recently and some wildly irresponsible
and dangerous steering in the past couple of weeks. Every crew member
has a responsibility to know the traffic conventions and follow them.
Also, if the sun is below the horizon - you must have a flashing white
light on the bow of your boat. If you don't have a working light on
your boat - don't go out.
ACTRA State

ACTAS
Scholarships - Draft Selection Criteria
DRAFT selection criteria for 2007 ACTAS scholarships are available here [pdf 100Kb]. This will be put
to the Joint Management Committee for approval in June. The draft will
give any potential scholarship holders an idea of the probable
criteria. In particular, the requirement to race in the ACTRA Winter
Time Trials, NTC Time Trials and the inclusion of regular 6000m and
2000m ergometer testing. Any athlete who believes they should be
considered for an ACTAS scholarship for the 2007 season may also wish
to contact Gordon Marcks at ACTAS so that he can ensure that you
receive any relevant information.

Please
observe this new safety measure as well as existing safety measures
such as using a 360degree flashing light when out between sunset and
sunrise. Vigilance is still paramount and lake users who do not adhere
to traffic rules may find themselves held personally responsible for
damage and their club's insurance may not cover them for the damage
incurred. Lake traffic flow can be found here.
Thanks to John Simson for his efforts in putting these buoys out.

(2000m) will be completed this week with CGGS girls doing it at the
CGGS shed Wed morning. All others will be done at the ACTAS boatshed on
Friday morning as per the times in the spreadsheet here. ALL athletes

Executive Officer
The President of ACTRA, Brendon Prout, yesterday announced the
appointment of Camilla Hayman to the role of ACTRA
Executive Officer, effective immediately. Camilla replaces Ross Jones
who recently resigned to take up an appointment with ACT Soccer (or was
that football?).
Brendon added:

ACTRA State
Team Info and Elite Devepment Program nominations
Iinformation and a nomination form for the Rowing Australia Youth Cup
to be held in Adelaide this September are attached here [pdf 88Kb]. Dates for the
Youth Cup are 1st - 3rd Sept.
Other state team

Festival, Penrith NSW, 17-21 January 2007
- Kings Cup
Regatta, Nagambie Vic, 11th March 2007
- Rowing Australia
Youth Cup, Nagambie Vic, 31st Aug - 2nd Sept 2007
More information
about the selection process for these teams will be released shortly. A
nomination form for athletes to be considered in the ACT Elite
Development Program is available here [pdf 60Kb].

Lake
Closure - Tarcoola Reach 8&9 April - Wakeboarding time of year
The eastern half (BM Peninsula side) of Tarcoola Reach will be closed
on the weekend after next for the ACT Wakeboarding Carnival. The
closure is between 0730 and 1800 hours each day. From past experience,
rowing boats need to be very careful anywhere near this area as the
wake boats do not stay contained in this area and the wakes definitely
don't. Small boats and inexperienced rowers should keep right away. An
accompanying safety (coach) boat is recommended. All traffic needs to
pass as close to Weston Park as possible and you will need to negotiate
with others using this narrow (and rough) channel to be as safe as
possible.
ACT
Representatives for Interstate Masters Events - Call for nominations
ACTRA is calling for nominations for the women's and men's eights and
quads to represent the ACT in the interstate masters races. These will
be held at lunchtime on Saturday 20th May as part of the Australian
Masters Rowing Championships on Lake Nagambie. Darrell Ninham (CRC) and
Stephen Trowell (BMRC) have been appointed as selectors. State Masters
Representative crews are D category, i.e average Masters age of 50 or
more.
It is planned to hold a race between the CRC and BMRC mens eights to
determine the representative mens eight. Other crews will be determined
according to the selectors' judgement of the fastest combinations that
meet the age requirement. Seat racing may be conducted in small boats
if necessary.
All those wishing to be considered are requested immediately to e-mail
their details including contacts and dob to
and also to fill in a nomination form (MS Word or PDF) and return to
by COB 12 April.

injury and therefore did not race.
Laying of
submarine cable - It is happening now
We were originally told the new submarine cable (probably needed for
BMRC's new web site) would be laid last month. You might have noticed
that it was laid last week instead. This week they are covering it
(underwater). You need to watch out for the barge that floats above the
diver(s) working below. It is not lit in the mornings even though it
starts before 0700 (before sunrise). It has a nice flag on it though,
and the workers are trying to keep out of the way. So watch out between
the Water Police station and Black Mountain Peninsula - don't just look
for flashing lights.

Thefts
It has been reported that we have had two break-ins in recent days
where outboard motors and sound systems have been taken. In addition,
many personal items were taken from at least one of the school tents at
the ISRA Regatta. Please keep an eye out for suspicious behaviours and
report them to the police. Every bit of information the police get
helps them piece it all together.

Defence Force Training - Fri. 10 - Mon. 20
February
ADFA
will be conducting its Year One Familiarisation Training at the ADFA
Boatshed, Yarralumla Bay between 0730 and 1700
daily. They will be undertaking water activities
from Yarralumla Bay extending out to the West Lake area of

that water craft avoid this area if possible. The instructors
will being keeping an eye out for rowers coming from under the
Sullivan's Ck bridge from ANU and will ensure that wake is kept to a
minimum whilst they transit the area. Water
Orienteering will require the laying of approx 14 buoys in west lake
and the bottom area along Black Mountain Peninsula. Most are
out of the traffic flows and those that do in some way impede will be
removed daily so as to not be a concern for the early morning
rowers. They will be layed again at 0830.
The activities are designed to built confidence, courage,
self-determination as well as be physically and mentally
challenging for young Midshipman and Officer Cadets who have
only recently joining the Australian Defence Force and those
of Six other Nations.
