ACTRA
Racing Rules
Over the last two weekends there have been sessions held for rowers and

Motor Boat
Safety
The Water Police are assisting the safe use of Canberra's lakes by
issuing some guidence on use of motor boats. You can find the
information here. Note that there are random
inspections taking place, even early in the morning. Key things you
need to take care of (ie don't take a motor boat onto the lake until
you have these things in order): driver has a motor boat licence; boat
has a permit from the the NCA; boat contains the required safety items:
Required (minimum)
safety equipment for Lake Burley Griffin is:
- Sufficient PFD's.
PFD's in poor condition may be considered unserviceable (ie not count)
for a variety of reasons. Assessment factors include: torn covers,
blackened and stained fabric (no longer bright & obvious),
reflective tape that's no longer reflective, or the jacket bulk
squashed wafer thin from use/abuse as a seat cushion (resulting in
reduced buoyancy). On a practical note, PFD's should be "readily
available", not tangled, or jammed in a location or gear sack requiring
time & effort to extract.
- Torches, with an
output capable of being used as an emergency light source, need to be
available, and need to work.
- Bailers are to
have a lanyard.
- Anchors, danforth
or plough type, and rope, with a length (approx 1m) of chain
- Fire extinguisher
- Paddle.
Both the police, and
ACTRA, advise that non-compliant boats/driver stay off the lake until
corrected.
Motor Boat
Drivers Licence Test
To assist compliance with the safety mentioned above, CGGS Rowing Club
has arranged a testing evening to be conducted at their boat shed at
6pm on Monday 10 October. The evening is open to coaches of other clubs
as well. Please contact Dafydd on 62026456 or at
for further information and booking. Licence tests can also be arranged in with
the NSW Maritime Authority in Queanbeyan.

Warning: Car Break-ins
We have some more information about the early morning car break-ins.
From the police:
Be aware that four vehicles were broken into at
Yarralumla Bay and Black Mountain peninsular last week. Victims lost
cash, cards, phones and personal items after having windows smashed
and/or doorlocks forced on their vehicles. The thefts were unusual in
that they occurred early morning (6.00-7.00am) effectively making
rowers the target. A small amount of stolen property was recovered in
Grevillea Park (down from the Boathouse Restaurant).
One of the victims saw the offenders leaving in an
old model white station wagon.
If anyone sees suspicious activity occurring, they should contact
Police Communications immediately on 131444 (24hours).
Please also remind your club members to not leave valuables in
their cars.
If anyone has further information on these (or other)
incidents, please contact the Water Police office on 62457393.
Thanks,
Cameron Knight

Trial #3 Start List - Revised Version
A revised start list for this weekend's time trials can be found here. The revision was as to
correct a handicap and has changed some bow number allocations. Don't
get your hopes up that the handicapper has decided to treat you
generously - there is no joy thinking that way.
Coaching
Course - Sunday 28 August
Rowing Australia has restructured its coaching course accreditation
scheme to provide 4 coaching levels as opposed to the previous 3. The
old level 1 coach is now reclassified as a level 2 with the new level 1
providing a basic introduction to coaching rowing at the community
level. The Level 1 course is aimed at parents, teachers,
outdoor rec instructors, boat race officials and senior school
students. No prior coaching experience is required but a minimum age of
16 years is required.
ACT Rowing has granted approval to the Capital Lakes Rowing Club to
conduct the first level 1 course under the new syllabus. The Course
will be held on Sunday 28 August (all day) and is
open to all clubs to nominate members interested in attaining the level
1 qualification. Numbers will be strictly limited so it is essential to
contact the Course Convener, David Butt on
to register your interest as a matter of
urgency. Course Cost will be $125.00 (including lunch and
refreshments). It will be the intention of Rowing ACT to conduct a
number of these courses over the coming months, together with a level 3
course, should there be sufficient interest.

Australian
U23 Squad - Report on results
The U23 Australian Rowing Team has finished their overseas campaign.
The Aussies
encountered a higher level of competition compared with previous years
as this was the first year FISA recognised the Regatta as an official
World Championship, prompting many countries to target the event in
this post-Olympic year. The Regatta was an opportunity for the
up-and-coming rowers to prove they had the ability to jump to the
senior level, and
many countries will be sending their athletes to the Senior
Championships in Gifu, Japan.
Finals day saw four
Aussie crews competing in the A finals into headwind conditions on the
Bosbaan course. Overall two crews ended up on the podium -- the W2x won
SILVER and the LW2x achieved BRONZE.
The ACT athletes and
their crews finished as follows:
- ML4- Mack Wilcox,
James Crouch, Andrew MacKenzie (c) -- 9th overall (3rd in B Final)
- W4- Sarah Cook,
Tara Huntley, Gordon Marcks (c) -- 6th overall (6th in A Final)
- ML4x Christopher
Ritchie, Phil Bourgignon (c) -- 5th overall (5th in A Final)
While Gordon,
Dafydd, Andrew, Phil and Chris have returned to Canberra, Mack, Jim,
Sarah and Tara have remained overseas for some well-deserved travel. We
wish them a safe journey home from Europe.
The Australian
Senior Team will be competing in the World Championships in Gifu, Japan
between 28 August - 4 September. The ACT will be represented by Sonia
Mills (W8+) and Craig Jones (M4x). For news and results visit: www.fisa.org,
www.w-rowinggifu.jp, www.rowingaustralia.com.au,
and here of course.

children have been keen contributors as well. We will all miss his
friendship and help. The ACT rowing community sends its sympathy and
support to his family.

Australian Rowing Championships. It starts at 09:30pm. The program
features the ten main finals, starting with the national schoolgirl and
schoolboy finals and culminating with the King's Cup itself. There's
also a 'behind the scenes' look at preparations by the Queensland eight
and its quest to end a 66-year 'drought', and at Tasmania's Simon
Burgess as he prepared for a record seventh straight win in the Penrith
Cup.
Expert commentary is
provided by four-time Olympian Bo Hanson and Athens women's eight
member Vicky Roberts, while winning crews are interviewed by either
James Tomkins or Rebecca Joyce.
We are assured by
Gordon Bray, through our Robin Poke (who assisted in putting it
together) that it's well worth seeing.

Dragon
Boats National Championships- 8-10 April
This regatta is being held on the Yarramundi Course for the next 3
days. Racing will start at 0800 on Friday, and 0700 on both Saturday
and Sunday. Other lake users are asked to respect this event and keep
out of the way. Of course, spectators are very welcome.
National
Rowing Regatta Entry System
Rowing Australia is leading a project to develop a national rowing
regatta system that will be internet based. The initial aim is to
support entries, results display and provision of linked web sites for
all Australian associations and clubs. Other ideas are being considered
for later versions. Current expectations are that a trial will be
available for use in a couple of months. Rowing Australia see this
initiative as bringing our sport in line with other Australian sports
that have national sites that are comprehensive information sources, an
example being tennis. Taste standards may
prevent me continuing to use garish colours on ACTRA's site (that is a
flippant comment for Andrew :^)

Safety - lights on boats
We are
receiving reports of near collisions in the early mornings, due to the
failure of boats to carry the required lighting. With the current
position of daylight saving the early mornings (6.00pm) are extremely
dark and I would ask all clubs to take particular care at this time. If
you don't have a light for your boat - don't row until after dawn.
