Email
from Gordon Marcks this morning:
Hi all,
The racing has been completed and reflecting back on the day is with a
whole range of emmotions.
Sarah and Tara had a great race in their final for their silver medal.
That was a great result in a very tough race. I've only seen Sarah and
Liz since the race but they they were certainly happy with the result
and how they rowed.
Mitch had a great race, laying down the first thousand to share the
lead with three other (two of which were trailing out of the blocks).
I'm sure that coming through the 1000m mark there were four bowballs
dead level. The 3rd 500 saw Latvia, Holland and England move enough away
from Mitch that he was unable to draw them back and that set the finish
order. While clearly dissapointed, I can't see what else could have
been done.
Chris and Howie spent the day watching races and running up and down
with flags and shouting a lot.
All the boats have been loaded and I'm on my way down to the party with
the parents and friends. Looking forward to returning to Canberra so
will see you soon.

Email
from Sarah Cook last night:
Hi Everyone
Well we're
2 days into the regatta and all is going well, most crews (including
mine) are through to the A-finals which is great. We're all getting
pumped for finals day tomorrow, it should be good we have a strong
Australian contingent this year so I think we'll all do pretty well.
The course
here is amazing, the finish towers and grandstands are huge. Though a
large portion of it is filled with green and gold which is awesome, the
Aussie supporters are definately the largest group, not to mention the
loudest! Since we've been here we have had to battle some pretty stiff
head winds, who ever said Poznan only got tail winds must have been
looking the wrong way!
I hope all
is going well back home, we miss you all lots. Thank you for all of
your support leading up to and during this regatta, we wouldn't be here
without you!
See you all
soon,
Luv Sarah
Cook
Email from Gordon
Marcks this morning:
Hey all,
Semi's were completed today with a definite lift in intensity. Mitchell
raced well in his semi to comfortably finish in 2nd position behind the
British sculler. A surprise came from the other semi with the Russian
unable to qualify for the final. Not sure what happened there but it
seems that the final is fairly open with Mitch being right in the
middle of that.
The light double rowed above themselves in difficult conditions to
finish 3rd in the C final. They had a stong head wind for the first
1000 with lots of waves that sometimes knocked them back. They stuck to
their guns and once they got into better water in the last 1000m, they
caught up on the others and rowed through the German double for their
3rd. It was a great race and we were very happy with their performance.
Not having raced today, haven't seen much of the women's four but they
were looking very relaxed at the team meeting tonight where we had a
few faxes read out.
The foreast for tomorrow is for head conditions with a few gold medals
later in the day. Bring it on.......
The
conditions look to continue as a head breeze.

Email
from Gordon Marcks this morning:
Hi all,
Hopefully you've checked the results on the FISA website so you will
know the basic results.
The Women's four had a good row this morning to win their heat. I saw
the end of their race and thought they looked very much in control and
rowing really well. That was great to see and the girls and Liz were
happy with the result and the way that they rowed.
For the heat of the single, Mitchell didn't feel as though he had a
good row and didn't pose a threat to the Russian sculler who finished
ahead of him. A positive from the row was that despite not having a
good one, he was still quite quick in comparison to many of the other
competitors. His row this afternoon in the rep was much better but
still working his way up to 100%.
Chris and Howard in the double had good rows but finished out of
contention for spots in the semi-finals tomorrow. While dissapointed,
we were happy that their races were as good as any work they had done
during the preparation and that they were making small steps and
progressing each time they got on the water. They will race the C final
Sat afternoon and will be looking to again, make further improvement.
The weather forecast for tomorrow is for higher temperatures so we'll
be taking care to stay out of the sun and conserve as much energy as
possible.
Over the last few days there has been an in-flux of Australian visitors
to the course. Although not always having time to chat while at the
course, it has been great to see some familiar faces. On Sunday night
there will be drinks and finger food at our hotel for the team with
freinds and family being invited as well.
Otherwise all's well & more soon.....

Hi all,
Just a quick one on Thursday night to say that everyone has just about
had their last lot of pre-race talks and are on the final approach.
Mitchell, Chris/Howie and Sarah/Tara/Emma/Felicity were all in good
spirits at dinner tonight. Tara has proved again that she has the
loudest laugh while Emma kept everyone entertained on her table.
Conditions at the course have shifted to what looks like a light head
breeze for the next couple of days with temperatures in the high 20's.
My understanding is that draws and results are available at
www.worldrowing.com
Tomorrow night we will have a much better indication of how we sit in
the competition once we have seen the results from the heats.

up and conditions at the course have been excellent. Most of the crews
had their final "team" activity yesterday with a 1000m and 500m piece
which all seemed to go pretty well.
The opening ceremony will be tonight and Mitchell Punch has been
selected to represent our team (along with Kate Hutchison and Nick
Hudson) in the "parade" as the most experienced member of the team. The
whole team will be there also so it should be a good evening.
Very few jobs are left to be done except some of the coaches will be
going down to the course after lunch to weigh boats and try to find
where the bike hire tent is.
The draw for tomorrow will be conducted at lunch today so if I can get
to the computer again this afternoon, I'll send what info I have.
More soon,
Gordo

Australian
U23 Rowing Squad - Now in Poland
More
news from our under 23 squad members in Europe via an email from Gordon
Marcks this morning (our time):
We left
Brandenburg this morning and made the 6(ish) hour bus trip in
reasonable comfort.
After checking in, the first job was to get down to the course to rig
up
boats and go for a quick row. With many of the other teams here also,
the
tension is increasing and it looks as though the Australian crews are
ready
to race. All the ACT rowers and coaches are in good spirits and can't
wait
for the racing to begin on Friday.
In the morning we will be having an early row, and depending on how the
crews are feeling, there may be the opportunity to have a little bit of
a
look around.
Racing will begin on Friday morning with the heats.

Australian
U23 Rowing Squad - More News from Europe
More
news from our under 23 squad members in Europe via an email from Gordon
Marcks this evening (out time):
Hi all,
With one more night to sleep in Brandenburg, everyone is getting
excited and ready for the races this week. After such a long
preparation, it's hard to believe that we have less than a week to go.
This morning's training was a 500, 1000 & a 500m pieces and it
looks as though all crews are going well and racing hard. Liz and I
have been on the finish line for most of the pieces over the last few
days which is probably the most entertaining spot to watch from.
This team must have set a new record for breaking oars. After having
all the sweep oars squashed in transit, the team has also broken a
further two sculling oars and one sweep oar while training on the
course. The buoys are rather hard!
Some of the coaches and myself signed up for a glider flight near here
and had the pleasure of flying with some of the best ex-fighter piolts
from the old East German Airforce. I for one, was a little bit green
around the gills when I returned.
Hopefully will be able to send more emails from Poland so more
soon.......

Hi all!
Sorry for the delay but getting access to email has been suprisingly
difficult in Germany.
After a week in Berlin, everyone has well and truely adapted to the
time
change and we have been training well on the Havel River just outside
of
Berlin.
Highlights so far have been being invited to a tour of the German
Parliament
and a boat cruise on the Havel River.
For those of you that can look through the website, some photos are
posted
at: www.havelstadt-brandenburg.de (You may need some German to find
them!!)
The hotel where we are staying is very comfortable and the staff and
visitors here have been doing what they can to make us feel at home.
We m,ove to Poland on Tuesday, with racing starting on the Friday.

30th June.
There are a number
of details still to be confirmed by Rowing Australia (such as direction
from the new Head Coach, format of Aus team selections and
regatta/trial dates etc) which may require changes at the local level.
So that at least some information is circulated in preparation for the
coming season, the following are some INTENDED details:
- The selection
criteria will be similar to that used in previous years.
- The ACTRA Winter
Time Trials will again be used as subjective information, with ACTAS
Scholarship aspirants required to race single single sculls on the
Saturday and ranked (from single results) doubles on the Sunday where
possible. Some form of sweep trial will be conducted in the week
following each Winter Time Trial where possible.
- The date of the
first Winter Time Trial is the 3rd/4th of July with other dates listed

ACT
Masters Sprint Regatta Saturday, 15 May 2004
Due to a lack of entries the proposed ACT Master's Regatta has been cancelled.
Many thanks to those clubs who provided entries. In the end we did not
have enough there to make the event a goer.
It was
agreed at the draw that, although the concept of an ACT Masters regatta
around this time of year was good, it should be incorporated into the
regatta season planning at a much earlier stage so that clubs can
better plan for it. On this occasion, with the late proposal to hold
the regatta, many people had obviously already made other plans for
this weekend.
The
ACT's 2004 national representatives, who were to be the beneficiaries
of funds raised at the masters regatta, will now be looking to other
opportunities to raise the forty-odd thousand dollars they need for
their national team levies.

ACT Masters
Sprint Regatta Saturday, 15 May 2004
The ACT Rowing Association is conducting a special
sprint regatta on Saturday 15th May to assist ACT rowers and
coaches who have been selected for national teams with their fund
raising.
Five ACT rowers and
two coaches have been selected for the Australian Teams to race at the
World Under 23 Regatta in Poland and the Senior World Rowing
Championships in Spain later this year. The rowers - Tara Huntly, Sarah
Cook, Chris Ritchie, Mitchell Punch, Sonia Mills and coaches
Gordon Marcks and Liz Harley have to each raise
around $7,000 towards the costs of their trips. The ACTRA Executive is
endeavouring to assist this group with its fundraising through this
regatta. The net entry fees and profits from the regatta will go
towards the rowers' and coaches' national team levies.

Disher Cup
Regatta - Saturday, 24 April 2004
The Disher Cup is on tomorrow, 24 April. This is a great event for
rowers as well as spectators. If you are using LBG tomorrow morning,
you need to be aware of the regatta and the constraints it places on
lake usage. The regatta will be run between 8.15 and 9.30am. The start
line is near the Carillon in Central Basin and the finish near the
white pylons on the Eastern side of Weston Park near Orana Bay.
The crews will be
cutting across the regular rowing traffic paths when racing, so you
must avoid training through that area at that time.
The Disher Cup often
attracts up to 1000 spectators, so you might see some interesting
groups establishing themselves on the lake shore from early in the
morning for their champaign breakfasts.
This event is not
run by the ACT Rowing Association. It is instead run under an agreement
between the ladies and gentlemen of the participating institutions,
although some ACTRA officials have been invited to assist.

Cliff Hill
Shield for outstanding participation in rowing
At its meeting on 15 April 2004 ACTRA's Committee agreed to seek
nominations from affiliated Clubs for award of the Cliff Hill Shield
which commemorates the services to rowing of Mr Cliff Hill, a prominent
ACT rowing administrator, coach and BRO in the 1970s.
The trophy is
awarded in recognition of outstanding performance by participants in
the sport whether they are competitors, coaches, boat race officials or
administrators, individuals or groups. Nominations must be made by
Clubs affiliated to ACTRA by the 20 May ACTRA Committee meeting. It is
intended that the trophy will be presented at the ACTRA AGM on 22 July
2004.

also shows some photos taken at previous Rowathons (including last
year's). It is not too early to commence your planning for the
Rowathon. This year, it is being held in early October and not, as in
the past, early November. The Murray River Rowathon, the longest
one-day row in the world, is staged for the benefit of the Royal

International Regatta Centre during 28-30 May 2004 includes interstate
events for mens' and womens' 8+ & 4x. These events are held

The increasing
competitiveness and profile of these events since they started two

a masters rower or sculler who believes they have something to
contribute to an 8+ or 4x that must have an average age of 50 or more -
you need to apply to ACTRA by 5pm on Tuesday 27 April

ACT
Championship Regatta Saturday & Sunday, 20-21 March
2004
The Canberra Rowing Club and ACT Championship
Regatta final draw is now available on this site. A media
release can be found here.
Note:
- Normal launching
and traffic arrangements will apply as the lake level is not considered
too low. The water level is now 33cm below the edge of the decking next
to the
regatta finish line, which makes it a significant reach down to get
boats in
and out of the water. Some Clubs may wish to make their own decisions
on whether to launch from the finish area. A marshall will be present
at the floating pontoon during the regatta to ensure the expeditious
movement of boats, as it is likely that traffic on the pontoon will be
busier than usual.
- Remember Bow
Balls, Correct Bow Numbers and Proper Uniform. Ensure
crews have sunscreen and water. If you have boat changeover problems,
alert the Finish Judge that your crew will be late to the start 10
minutes before the start of the race. The starters and umpires to be
tolerant of late arrivals at the start, PROVIDED that your club manager
notifies the finish 10 minutes before the start that the crew will be
late due to a boat changeover problem.
- Note the
ANUBC/CRC 40th Anniversary Race is scheduled for 11:50 on Saturday.
- Scatchings have
meant that:
Y9G2X - One final race only now on Saturday.
SG/JW2X - One final race, first thing on Sunday.
- A security guard
has been arranged for the finish line regatta area from the
end of racing on Saturday through to the commencement of racing on
Sunday,
in case clubs and schools would like to leave equipment at the finish
area
overnight.

ACT Championship Regatta Saturday
& Sunday, 20-21 March 2004
The Canberra Rowing Club and ACT Championship
Regatta preliminary draw is now available on this site. Note
that the final draw will be issued on Friday morning and may have some
adjustments to orders and times of events. You should also check on
Friday for the decision on whether the lake level has dropped
sufficiently to require a change to the launching and traffic
arrangements.

Greg Welsh Memorial Regatta
Saturday, 3 April 2004
The ACT Rowing Association is organising an additional regatta at the
end of the 2003-4 season to honour the memory of Greg Welsh, ACTRA's
honorary treasurer, keen rowing supporter and all round good guy. A
program for the regatta will be published next week, but will be based
on the standard ACT program but with distances of 500m or 1000m. There
will also be some events available for mothers and daughters, and
fathers and sons. This is not a point score regatta and all money
raised from seat fees will be donated to the Welsh family.

ACT Senior
Women's 8 for National Championships
The ACT Rowing Association has reconsidered it position on boating a
crew in the prestigious Senior Women's 8 (Queens Cup) event at the
National Rowing Championships at Nagambie next week.
Whilst the final
crew will indeed be a scratch crew, possibly completed with the
addition of athletes from the Junior Women's 8, an ACT crew can compete
in an event even when some larger states are not represented. The
senior women athletes driving the process of boating this crew are to
be commended for their determination with this task.
Based upon lessons
learned with the selection of this years Nationals team, ACTRA intends
to fully review the process, implementing appropriate changes in time
for next years event.
The crew selections will be confirmed as soon as possible. This will
more than likely be at Nagambie. Please contact Gordon Marcks if you
require any further information. Tel: 6207 4393 (BH) Mob: 0407 787 270

ACTRA
Executive Officer call for expressions of interest
In line with a major recommendation of the recent ACTRA Strategic
Review, the Association is seeking expressions of interest in a new
ACTRA Executive Officer position. Based at Sports House in Hackett, the
Executive Officer will have broad responsibility for management of
ACTRA operations under the direction of the ACTRA Committee. Duties
will include those of the Sports Development Officer position currently
occupied by Adair Ferguson. The Committee is currently discussing the
transitional arrangements between these positions with Adair. More
information is available here and an application
package is available here.
Haimish
Karrasch needs your help
Haimish, one of Australia's top rowers for several years now, is
seeking logistical assistance in Canberra. Some atheletes ask for
money, Haimish is just asking for a couple of favours.
He is looking for
someone to help store some furniture etc from
approximately 20/03/2004 until 30/08/2004. He has to vacate his present
premises in Canberra in March and as a member of the Australian Olympic
Rowing Team will then be overseas from 15/06/2004 returning 30/08/2004
(approximate dates). He has a house full of stuff so he'll probably
need a bit of room (TV, Stereo, Kitchen Equipment, Bed, Dining Table,
chairs, couch, clothes & a washing machine).
He is also looking
for someone who can possibly look after my two Jack Russells,
Max & Ruby while he is overseas competing at the Olympics. He
will be overseas from 15/06/2004 until 30/08/2004 (approximate dates).
Max and Ruby are brother and sister and have never been apart, they
keep each other company. They are very friendly dogs and need a home,
preferably with a fenced yard. Anyone who can help mind Max and Ruby
would be greatly appreciated. Haimish can be contacted on 0419 643 493
or e-mail
.

Radford
College Regatta Sat. 28 February 2004
The Radford College Regatta
results are available.
ACT Rowers
in Australian Team
The following ACT (and region) rowers have made it into the Australian
team for 2004. Several other ACT rowers came very close. We are
honoured to be associated with them.
- Craig Jones
Men's 1X
- Donna Martin
Women's sculling (1X, 2X, 4X)
- Jane Robinson
Women's sculling (1X, 2X, 4X)
A special mention of
some non-ACT people in the team: Katie Foulkes cox of the women's 8
(who has given so much help to some old ACT people who still try to
row); and Monique Heinke in the women's sweep squad (who is an old
friend of one of my nieces).
There is more detail
on the Rowing Australia web site.

Radford
College Regatta Sat. 28 February 2004
The Radford College Regatta
final draw is now available. Remember - correct bow numbers, check bow
balls, correct uniform!! If a crew is unable to row in its designated
race, then it must be scratched at least one hour
before the race at the Finish Desk, otherwise an charge of $10.00 per
DNS boat will be invoiced to the responsible club.
Note that the Sri
Chinmoy Triathlons are on this weekend and so for the regatta:
- Garryowen Drive
on Black Mountain Peninsula will be closed from 0800 to 1030. So if you
want to row from Black Mountain, Radford or Daramalan boatsheds, get
there before 0800.
- The swim leg will
be held in Tarcoola Reach between 0800 and 0845. You must obey all
marshalls in this area and row carefully on the Weston Park side of the
Reach when going to and from the regatta.
- Mountain bikes
will be using the bike path through the spectator area at the regatta
course. The path will be taped off with two crossing points. Please be
careful.
|
| 25 Feb 2004 |
Sri Chinmoy
Triathlons Fri, Sat & Sun 27-29 February 2004
In addition to the items mentioned above, there will be some events on
Friday and significant events on Sunday. For Sunday you need to be
aware that:
- Tarcoola Reach
(the bit of water between Black Mountain Peninsula and Weston Park) is closed
between 0700 and 0930. Don't even try to sneek past row
somewhere else. Those rowing from Black Mountain Peninsula will be able
to get out and back to Yarramundi Reach with some difficulty.
- Lady Denman Drive
and Garryowen Drive will be closed to motor vehicles from 0600 to 1200.
This is going to make access to boatsheds on Black Mountain Peninsula
difficult. Note that many triathletes will be parking around about and
cycling/walking/running to the Peninsula.
- Be patient and
thoughtful around the event and remember that we expect exclusive use
of Yarramundi Reach many times each year.
Olympic
Selections
The Olympic Selection trials are continuing at the Regatta Centre at
Penrith with the teams due to be announced on this coming Sunday. There
is some scant news on the Rowing
Australia web site that indicates that ACT residents Donna
Martin and Jane Robinson are still in there for women's sculling.
Others have done well, but have not made the initial cut that was
applied last weekend. Congratulations to all those that even got to be
invited to the trials.
Indoor
Rowing Regatta Wednesday, 3 March 2004
Next Wednesday Glebe Park Health Club is holding an indoor rowing
competition at the Canberra Centre. Entries are for teams of 4 (2 male
and 2 female) and should be submitted to Glebe Park Health Club on fax
6262 9111 or ring them on 6274 5594. There are prizes to participants
including a WaterRower valued at $2,245. This event has nothing to do
with ACTRA but don't let that stop you having fun and winning a
beautiful looking and quiet WaterRower.

ACT Schools
Regatta
We have just got confirmation that the ACT Schools Regatta will
definately take place on Thursday, 1 April (no fooling). This is the
5th year this regatta has been run and it has always been a great
success. This regatta differs from the normal ACTRA regattas in that
the race distances are shorter, and the race officials provide more
support for inexperienced racers. Read more about it here.

ACT Club
Point Score Competition
I forgot to mention the availability of the cumlative points for the
season being available after the Daramalan College Regatta. They are
now available here. Attention will be
on the fight for the Women's competition with Black Mountain Rowing
Club narrowly leading Canberra Rowing Club, and with Canberra Girls'
Grammar School within striking distance. With only two more regattas in
the season, and one of those having championship events that (I
believe) have double points attached, it should look good for race
entries in women's and girl's events.

A few things to keep

- Payment is to
Rowing Victoria NOT Rowing Australia or ACTRA
- Deposits are
returned to clubs, not the individual rowers.
- Clubs and school
are asked to bundle entries from their members together, having checked
that the details are correct and that full payment is included.
An information
bulletin which includes a program, entry form and other
information is available at the Rowing
