AIS Common Cold Research - opportunity to join in
Upper respiratory tract infections (common cold) infections are a reason many athletes miss training in Canberra during the winter season. The Department of Physiology is undertaking a study to examine whether probiotics reduce colds and GI illness over the 6 months of winter and spring. The study involves taking a probiotic supplement provided by the AIS daily from May to September 2010 and filling in an online daily physical activity and illness log. The log takes about 2 minutes per day to fill out. The study is designed to be as minimally time consuming as possible and only require participants to be able to log in to a computer.
Probiotic supplements, termed good bacteria, are being marketed as a way to boost your immune system and reduce the risk of contracting infection.
While evidence for the use of probiotic supplements in specific sub-groups of the population is increasing, there is little evidence of efficacy in physically active, healthy individuals.
If you are between 18 to 60 years of age, healthy and undertaking a minimum 2 to 3 exercise sessions a week, we are looking for you.
There are a number of benefits of participating, including:

  1. That the supplement may reduce the risk of illness this winter;
  2. The AIS is running free lectures on nutrition and training program design; and
  3. The supplement is free.

The only restriction is that a number of brands of commercial yoghurt cannot be eating during the study.  More information can be found here.  Or you can contact Nicholas West at the AIS at clinicaltrialais@ausport.gov.au for more information.

Physiology Testing - Participants Sought
An opportunity has come up for ACT rowers to participate as subjects in some testing being conducted by a PhD student based in the Physiology Department of the Australian Institute of Sport.  The testing quantifies individuals’ responses to supplements used by rowers (caffeine and sodium bicarbonate) when completing repeated 2000m efforts (in a similar format to a major regatta).

The testing will begin the week after the ACT Championships (the week of 15th March), and will be completed by 2 April (Good Friday).  Each rower completes a total of 6 x 2000m erg tests.  There are three tests in the first week, then one week with no testing, and three more tests in the final week (the week of 29th March).  Testing is done between 6am and 8am on the designated days.

Each participant will receive information on his/her performance after taking each supplement, and from the results we can recommend the most suitable supplements (for that athlete) to use in preparation for competition. Please note that this does not breach any sporting or ASADA codes. Details of the study can be found here.

If you would like to participate, or to find out more information, please email to ASAP .

In addition, the ACT Championship womens 1X  will be dedicated to the memory of Amy Gillett.  For those from Amy's generation of elite rowers get on your bike and contact Angie Holbeck.

ISRA Regatta - Complete Results
The results of the ISRA regatta are available here: Day 1; Day 2.

Message from ACTRA President

Dear rowing supporters

I would like to thank our Boat Race Officials for running a superb ISRA regatta over the weekend. This regatta is the biggest in the ACT and despite its bad press last year, continues to attract many Inter-state schools despite competing regattas in Sydney and elsewhere.
We continue to attract many excellent School rowing programs to compete. Gold medals reflected good wins against tough competition, and I congratulate all winning crews. All participants were involved in close racing, and would have enjoyed the perfect conditions for much of the regatta.
Our Boat Race Officials did Rowing ACT proud. Despite having intervals of 4 minutes between races and strong cross winds, they still managed to get most of the regatta away on time, notwithstanding the inability of Year 8 rowers to maneuver their boats at the start.
Our volunteers keep our sport afloat.
This was a great co-operative effort, reflecting the best of the rowing community in the ACT.
Thanks also to regatta convener Dafydd  Gwynn-Jones, ACTRA Admin Officer Anthony Pardy, and the army of parents who supported as traffic wardens, food sellers, commentators and other roles from all of the participating schools
--
David Bagnall
